Many of my clients complain about stress and weight gain and do not realize that the two come hand in hand. So, here is the story:
Stress causes the human body to release the hormones cortisol and epinephrine, which encourage fat formation. In early man, these “fight or flight” chemicals were important in times of threat, when the fat was quickly utilized or man had to run fast from predators.
But under today’s daily stress, we are constantly “threatened,” and so, constantly build fat. In primitive time, after a surge of fight or flight hormones, humans were able to relax and the body was able rebalance itself. Today, with continuous stress and no relaxation our bodies get built up with these stress hormones, causing weight gain.
